THE TOKENÄS LIGHTHOUSE AT BYXELKROK

As shipping increased along northern Öland, the need for safe navigation also grew. At the northern tip of Öland stands the great lighthouse Långe Erik, built in 1844-1845, and at Tokenäs in Byxelkrok, a closer beacon was established in 1893.

The Tokenäs lighthouse helped vessels navigate through Kalmarsund, helping them avoid shallow waters and safely reach the harbours of Tokenäs and Byxelkrok. Lighthouse keepers worked in the small house by the sea.

Tokenäs point was home to an important harbour where limestone was shipped from, making the site an important centre for maritime trade. Today, the Tokenäs Lighthouse is still operational but is unmanned.
