FORGALLASLAGET – BETWEEN LEGEND AND REALITY

On the shore south of Neptuni Fields lies one of Öland's most mysterious sites – known as the Forgalla Ship. Here, legend and reality come together.

According to legend, a fierce sea battle took place off the coast. Viking ships clashed, and in the chaos, the enemy vessel – Forgalla – ran aground on the shoal that later gave the site its name. The dead were brought ashore, laid in coffins, and covered with stones as a final resting place after the battle.

However, archaeology tells a more peaceful and complex story. Graves from the Viking Age have been found here – including not only warriors, but also women and children buried with their belongings.

Perhaps the legend preserves the memory of a real event. Today, the sites remains a place where history, the sea, and myth meet.
